Where to stay in Cairns

Cairns is a gateway to the reef and the rainforest, so many stays are short and tour-heavy. The Esplanade is convenient, while the northern beaches trade walkability for space.

Neighbourhoods at a glance

Cairns City and the Esplanade

The best base for reef and rainforest tours, with the lagoon, restaurants and the pier within walking distance. It is practical rather than quiet.

Cairns North

A short ride from the centre, with more space and lower rates. Good for families or anyone with a car who wants to be close without the tour-strip bustle.

Northern beaches

Palm Cove and the beaches north of the city offer a resort feel and calmer evenings. You will need a car or a transfer for tours and the airport.

Manunda and Westcourt

Practical, cheaper and close to the airport and shopping. Not a holiday setting, but useful for an early flight or a tight budget.
