Where to stay in Bangkok

Bangkok is cheap, busy and deeply layered. Traffic can erase a short distance, so staying near the Skytrain or metro matters more than being close on a map.

Neighbourhoods at a glance

Sukhumvit

The modern spine of the city, with the Skytrain, malls and everything from hostels to five-star towers. It is convenient but can feel generic.

Silom and Sathorn

Business by day, with good transport and a quieter night than Sukhumvit. Useful for a short stay or a mix of work and sightseeing.

Riverside

Temples, ferries and hotel pools with a view. It is calmer and more expensive, and the river boat is often faster than the road.

Old Town and Khao San

The historic core and backpacker strip, with cheap rooms and major temples nearby. It is lively and noisy, and the Skytrain does not reach it.
